Purpose:

A series of interlinked Paramedic tasks done quickly and efficiently to showcase the skill set of this group of Emergency Medical Services personnel.

The Course:

On the “Go” signal (“Medic One Eight marked On Scene”), the Paramedic Competitor (wearing PPE), places the first in kit positioned at the base of the tower on their back, grasps the defibrillator and runs/walks to the fifth floor landing. The pack will be in the beam, and as soon as it is moved, the time starts.

1) On the landing is the first casualty: an adult male manikin positioned against the railing (head/chest/arms visible).  The Paramedic arrives, assesses for Level of Consciousness, Airway and Breathing.  No respiratory effort is present, so Paramedic lowers the victim to the floor, opens airway and the manikin begins spontaneously breathing.  The patient also has a cervical spine injury, so care must be taken while moving the victim. The Tower judge gives the Green flag and the Paramedic then makes their way down the stairs to the next evolution.

2) With pack and defib still in hand, the Paramedic approaches the second victim, another male manikin, who is lying supine. The victim is in cardiac arrest.  Paramedic approaches, notes the victim is not breathing and has no pulse, takes out the defib, attaches electrodes, analyzes and shocks.  Course referee confirms return of pulse and Paramedic moves on. Note: the defib stays at this station but the pack must continue through the course.

3) Navigating a series of obstacles, Paramedic moves to the end of the course where a pediatric manikin is in full respiratory arrest.  The Paramedic assesses the child quickly and determines the child is unconscious and in respiratory arrest due to choking. Paramedic takes the pack off their back, removes the Child BVM and attempts five (5) ventilations.  After the fifth ventilation and with the approval of the course Referee, moves to the last evolution.

4) Running/walking from the end of the course to the front of the course, a 175 lb Victim is positioned too close to a hazard. The Paramedic grasps the manikin and moves it 75 feet back to safety across the finish line.  Time does not stop until the Paramedic, the manikin and the first-In-Kit is across the line.  The pack must be on the Paramedic’s back as they crosses the finish line.
